Arsenal make first move in race for Ukrainian forward Mykhaylo Mudryk, Shakhtar Donetsk demand £85 million

Arsenal have made a formal offer for 21-year-old Shakhtar Donetsk winger Mykhaylo Mudryk, according to the Guardian.

Mudryk is understood to be keen on a move to Emirates Stadium but the Gunners’ bid, estimated to be at around £55 million including add-ons, falls below the Ukrainian club’s £85 million valuation.

Mudryk is reportedly Arsenal’s top priority going into the January transfer window as they look to bolster their attacking options in search of their first Premier League title since 2004.

Brentford were understood to be previous admirers of Mudryk, with the Bees willing to make him their club-record signing during the summer transfer window, but his stock has since risen rapidly following an impressive Champions League campaign.

The winger, who turns 22 next month, has scored 10 goals in 18 games across all competitions this campaign, including three goals in six Champions League appearances.

If Arsenal want to land their man, it’s likely they will have to increase their fee with Shakhtar Donetsk known for being notoriously tough negotiators.

Speaking ahead of Arsenal’s game against West Ham United on Monday evening, manager Mikel Arteta revealed the club would be active in the transfer market as they look to stay ahead of Manchester City in the race for the title.

“We knew the importance of getting players early in the summer and that is the same we want to do in January,” Arteta said.

“This is idealistic. Sometimes it is not realistic. But obviously, if you ask my opinion, as quick as possible we want the players in to get settled.”
